En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view, which is Antonio Figueros’ preferred painting method.
Antonio is known for his local landscapes and city scapes that use the natural light to capture the essence of his subject matter. As our world got reshaped by the global pandemic and Trinidad went into lockdown Antonio's opportunity for outdoor painting became limited to his immediate surroundings. ‘The colour of light series’ was born of this limitation turned backhanded opportunity. Antonio revisted the same scene painting the light, capturing the moods of the sky and turning out 5 beautiful paintings from the same mundane setting.
Maybe I am longing for the far away in our new restricted life but to me the palette of the series makes me think to van goghs landscapes and as I do so local fauna morph into Cyprus trees while I envision a broken down water tank as a hay bale.
Antonio says of the works that they are his contribution to the ‘Covid Cronicles’ and we understand what he means as we all find innovative ways of not just existing but thriving in our new ‘normal’.
