Traces of Sand
“What does an image become as it is assembled grain by grain?”
Selected from nearly a decade of Nazan Tosun’s artistic practice, the works in this exhibition are brought together not in chronological order, but through a shared approach to making. What connects them lies less in the images they depict than in how these images are constructed. Through the patient assembly of grains, fragments, and colours, small elements become a whole through repetition and time.
At the centre of Tosun’s practice is micro-sand. Using colours and shades she prepares herself, the artist creates surfaces with varying textures and geometric arrangements. The geometric thinking rooted in her background in civil engineering informs this process, where technical precision becomes an integral part of artistic expression.
The exhibition unfolds through three unmarked sections. The first explores the artist’s connection to Antalya through nature and cultural memory, featuring works such as Rhythm of Nature, The Enchanted Peonies of the Mediterranean, and Döşemealtı Carpet Motifs. The second section turns towards personal experiences and figurative narratives. Silent Letters, in particular, carries traces of waiting, emotion, and personal history through its years-long production process. The final section presents graphic and Pop Art–influenced works, revealing how micro-sand takes on different visual languages through colour, line, and texture.
Nazan Tosun’s first solo exhibition also marks the inaugural exhibition of TT ART SPACE. At the heart of this encounter lies a single question: What does an image become as it is assembled grain by grain? The answer is sought not only in the completed works, but also in the patience, repetition, and time devoted to their creation.
